Hiring Full-Time Police Officer

POLICE OFFICER

The Town of Orono is seeking an energetic, motivated individual for the position of full-time Police Officer. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, have completed the 100 hour Law Enforcement Pre-Service Training Program, and have passed the Maine Criminal Justice Academy (MCJA) ALERT and physical agility tests. Applicants may also be required to pass an oral board; and, may be subjected to medical, psychological, and polygraph tests, as well as a background check. The Town offers a competitive salary and benefit package including health and dental insurance, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, and participation in the Maine State Retirement System. Police Officers are also covered under the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement. Lateral transfer incentives are available for individuals who have completed the MCJA Basic Law Enforcement Training Program or its equivalent. Starting salary is commensurate with experience.

Drug Disposal

DEA has scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 29, 2011, from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. to provide a venue for persons who want to dispose of unwanted and unused prescription drugs.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. More than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Each day, approximately, 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

DEA in conjunction with state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the United States conducted National Prescription Drug Take Back Days on Saturday, September 25, 2010 and April 25, 2011. Nearly, 4,000 state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the nation participated in these events, collecting more than 309 tons of pills.

Four days after last fall’s Take-Back Day, Congress passed legislation amending the Controlled Substances Act to allow the DEA to develop a process for people to safely dispose of their prescription drugs. DEA immediately began developing this process after President Obama signed the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010 on October 12. Until that process is complete, however, DEA will continue to hold Take Back Days every six months.

It shall be unlawful for the owner or operator to cause, allow or permit any vehicle to be parked on any street within the Town of Orono between the hours of twelve (12) midnight and eight (8) o’clock AM from the 1st day of November in any year to the 15^th day of April in the following year.

Penalties: Any person violating this regulation is subject to a fine and the removal and impoundment of said vehicle, with the cost thereof paid by the owner or operator before release.

Maine AG Warns About Earthquake-Related Scams

AUGUSTA, Maine -- Maine Attorney General William Schneider said residents need to be wary about donating to relief efforts linked to the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.Schneider said a tragedy like the one in Japan creates an opportunity "for good-hearted people to be victimized by scammers." He reminds residents to never give out a credit card, debit card or bank information over the phone or over the Internet.He said Maine consumers who wish to determine if a charity is legitimate are encouraged to check the Maine Office of Licensing & Registration.
